Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian

The following prayer is read upon entering the Church as we make three prostrations (except Compline on Friday up to and including Compline on Sunday).

Lord and Master of my life, a spirit of idleness, curiosity, ambition, and idle talk, give me not. (prostration)

But a spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love, bestow upon me, Thy servant. (prostration)

Yea, Lord and King, grant me to see mine own failings, and not to condemn my brother; for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. Amen. (prostration)

Then we bow twelve times while making the sign of the cross, saying each time, “O God, cleanse me a sinner, and have mercy on me.” And again we make a prostration, repeating the last verse of the above prayer.

General Exceptions: Annunciation of the Theotokos, Thursday of the Great Canon, and Saturday of the Akathist.
